Nephosthe weather behind the paintings
Kensett’s Beach at Beverly: wooded rocks at left, a rowboat and figures on the curved beach, and pale calm water beneath an expansive cloudy sky.

A study against the weather record

John Frederick Kensett

Beach at Beverly

c. 1869/1872 · National Gallery of Art, Washington · 1978.6.5

The shore is identified. The summer is not. What can the regional rain register add to this carefully composed view?

4regional summers compared separately. No single summer, day or observed sky can be assigned to the painting.

The Nephos method

How this study was read

The method in full
  1. What is written

NGA dates this unsigned, undated canvas by style. The shore identification is documented; the depicted season, painting session and making sequence are not. Four June–August windows provide context only.

  2. Records of those days

Not found or not yet searched

    • No inspected letter, sketch annotation or contemporary record establishes a Beverly session or depicted summer.
    • No verified Beverly weather narrative, local cloud series, wind, tide or wave measurements are matched to the canvas.
  3. Each claim tested

    • Does about 1870 identify one summer? No. The catalogue assigns an approximate stylistic range; summer itself is a comparison convention.
    • What survives of regional summer rainfall? June–August totals at Fort Independence: 1869: 7.90 inches; 1870: 9.97 inches; 1871: 10.69 inches; 1872: 16.84 inches. None is selected as the depicted summer.
    • Did Kensett make the weather calmer? Unknown. The catalogue compares deliberate compositional changes between related paintings. Rainfall cannot measure sea state or supply the unrecorded observed sky.
  4. Verdict

The same regional gauge records different rainfall totals across the four comparison summers. The canvas’s calm remains a pictorial fact, not a reconstruction of a Beverly day.

    • UnknownA particular painted summer The daily record supports contextual rainfall sums; no particular summer is assigned to the picture.
    • UnknownThe painted weather or an alteration by Kensett No dated session and no matched local sky or sea record.

What this cannot tell you. The catalogue’s circa range is not a strict bound on the scene. Earlier visits or sketches remain possible. Archive zeros are retained. MRCC may have completed blanks with zeros after comparison with monthly totals; zeros are not all independently written no-rain observations. Rain totals do not measure sunshine, haze, wind, tides or waves. No climate rank, modern normal or four-year average is published.

The shore and the picture

Beverly, once called Newport

A wooded rock formation anchors the left of the canvas; beyond a rowboat and figures on the beach, the sea opens into a pale sky. The National Gallery of Art identifies the projection between Curtis Point and Mingo Beach. Older exhibition titles placed it at Newport. The present study follows the holder’s Beverly identification, rather than borrowing the date of another Kensett beach picture.

The painting belongs to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, accession 1978.6.5, Gift of Frederick Sturges, Jr. Historic Beverly does not own it. The NGA explicitly places this reproduction in the public domain; its open-access policy permits reuse. The image credit identifies the holder and does not imply institutional endorsement.

In the NGA catalogue, pp. 396–397, Franklin Kelly compares this work with The Coast at Beverly: foreground rocks, boats, viewpoints and colour accents vary. That comparison supports deliberate arrangement. It does not establish that Kensett changed the actual weather or the sea.

The date

An approximate range, not a recorded summer

The catalogue calls this canvas “neither signed nor dated” and locates it “on stylistic grounds” among late works (p. 394). Its c. 1869/1872 date is an attribution, not four years of documented visits. No inspected letter, sketch inscription or session record dates the sky.

June–August in each of those years is used below as an explicit summer-context convention. The depicted season is unestablished; these are illustrative regional summers, not candidate days selected by weather agreement. The approximate catalogue range does not exclude earlier visits, sketches or memories. On-site execution and later studio work remain unresolved.

The catalogue’s note 12 also says that the order of this canvas and The Coast at Beverly cannot be established from documents. A quieter sea in one version is therefore not a dated before-and-after weather record.

The regional record

One gauge, four different summers

The U.S. Army’s Fort Independence register, in Boston Harbor, survives through NOAA/CDMP and MRCC. Its metadata location is approximately 27.7 km from a modern Mingo beach monitoring point. That separation is a regional reference, not a distance to Kensett’s easel. The fort’s exact instrument location is unknown.

The later comparison summer has more recorded rain than the earlier one. That is a contrast within these four windows, not a claim of exceptional wetness, a climate trend or a reason to date the painting. Rainfall measures none of the canvas’s haze, sunshine or wave height.

MRCC marks precipitation quality control complete for this station. Its method allows blank dates to be filled with zeros when recorded amounts account for the monthly total. A digital zero therefore need not mean the observer explicitly wrote that no rain fell. The original form can mention rain without a measured amount. No count of rainless or sunny days is inferred from these zeros.

Return to the picture

Calm in the canvas; weather unresolved

The painting is a particular arrangement of Beverly’s shore, rather than a summary of a summer. The gauge records rain accumulated over months; the canvas presents one composed view. Even a rainy season can contain quiet intervals, and a dry reporting date does not establish calm water or a clear sky at the beach.

The June 1869 form and August 1872 form were opened and spot-checked against the digital record. They are different versions of the same underlying evidence. No verified local diary or newspaper weather account was obtained in this bounded search.

A dated preparatory drawing or letter could change the question by identifying an encounter with this shore. A local register might then test particular conditions. With the evidence currently in hand, the regional summers can be described, but the painted day, depicted season and any weather Kensett altered remain unknown.

Weather sums are rebuilt from cached files checked against their sha256 fingerprints. NGA object and policy receipts are browser text captures; the catalogue text is a local PDF extraction.
